Imagine looking back at 2025 and feeling a sense of joy and great accomplishment, knowing it was your best year yet. What if that became your reality? In this post, I’m sharing seven steps to help you dream big, take action, and make 2025 the year you’ve always envisioned.
My Journey to Intentional Goal Setting
I can remember a time when I’d jot down a list of New Year’s resolutions on a random piece of paper or Post-it note and literally forget about them. One year, while cleaning out the drawer of my desk, I discovered one of those lists of resolutions—completely untouched.
A lot has changed since then.
I’ve realized that change can happen anytime; you don’t have to wait until a new year rolls around to create intentions and goals.
The other thing that has changed is how intentional I’ve become about my goals. I use the Powersheets Goal Planner, a system that works, and I love sharing that system with others.
Step 1: Set Clear Goals and Write Them Down
This step is all about gaining clarity and focus. Writing your goals down isn’t just a formality; there’s science behind it. Studies show that people who write down their goals are significantly more likely to achieve them.
But don’t stop at vague goals like “travel” or “grow my business.” Be specific. Where do you want to travel? What aspect of your business do you want to grow? For example, “Visit Greece in May and stay for two weeks” or “Launch a new product line and gain 50 new customers by Q2.”
I also want to encourage you to think beyond business. When it comes to setting goals, this has been one of the best decisions that I’ve made. Consider all areas of your life. Here’s a list of ideas to get you started:
- Spiritual Growth: Deepen your faith or start a daily gratitude journal to improve your mindset.
- Personal Development: Focus on skills, education, or leadership growth.
- Relationships: Strengthen family connections or friendships.
- Health: Prioritize physical well-being and self-care.
- Community: Volunteer or give back.
- Hobbies: Revisit old passions or explore new ones. Make space for fun!
- Business and Finances: Define specific growth milestones.
Take a moment to reflect: Where are you now in each of these areas? What do you want to improve and grow in 2025? Whether you use a journal, planner, or simple notebook, what matters most is taking that first step.
Step 2: Create a Vision Activator
You’ve written your goals. Now, let’s make them visual so they stay top of mind. This is where a “vision activator” comes in. It’s more than a vision board; it’s a motivator—a daily reminder of what you’re working towards.
Some ideas include:
- A traditional vision board with magazine clippings.
- A digital board created on Canva.
- A private Pinterest board.
On my vision board, I focus on zones created from my goals that matter most: mindset, health, relationships, business, and time to pause. One quote I’ve included this year is from Jim Rohn: “Success is nothing more than a few simple disciplines practiced every day.” Seeing it daily reminds me to stay consistent.
Step 3: Step Outside Your Comfort Zone
Growth happens when we stretch ourselves. Let me share a personal story: I once attended a workshop by Parker Pfister called Not the Same Old Stuff. (it was another “s” word, but let’s go with stuff😊)
It was designed to challenge everything I thought I knew as a photographer. We faced exercises that pushed us to the brink of tears, but those failures taught me invaluable lessons. It was one of the most transformative photography workshops that I ever attended. The lessons learned in that weekend have been transferrable to many areas of my life.
Stepping outside your comfort zone isn’t easy, but it’s where the magic happens. Is there something you’ve been dreaming about—starting a YouTube channel, launching a new offer, or speaking at an event? This is your time.
Step 4: Build Accountability and Support Systems
Don’t go it alone. Find someone to encourage and hold you accountable. Sometimes, the difference between finishing a project and giving up is having someone to check in with.
Ask yourself:
- Do you need weekly or monthly check-ins?
- Could a friend join you for workouts or brainstorming sessions?
- Would a coach or mentor help you stay focused?
Last year, partnering with someone for accountability made all the difference in achieving one of my goals. Think about what kind of support you need and don’t hesitate to ask for it.
Step 5: Create Boundaries and Make Space for Joy
This step is all about balance. Burnout doesn’t help anyone, so creating boundaries and making time for joy is essential. For me, that means scheduling downtime for gardening, reading, and solo business retreats.
On my vision board, I’ve included a zone that says, “Permission to Pause.” It’s a reminder to say yes to what fills my cup and no to what doesn’t. What brings you joy? Make space for it in 2025.
Step 6: Stay Consistent, Not Perfect
My word for 2025 is consistency. It’s not about doing everything perfectly; it’s about showing up regularly. Small, consistent actions lead to big results.
Here’s how to start:
- Break your goals into small, manageable steps.
- Plan your actions weekly or monthly.
- Focus on progress, not perfection.
If you’re feeling overwhelmed, start with one thing. Build the habit, then move to the next.
Step 7: Reflect and Celebrate Your Wins
Finally, reflection and celebration are key. Take time at the end of each day, week, or month to reflect on your progress. Ask yourself:
- What did I learn?
- What did I accomplish?
- What can I improve?
Celebrating even the small wins helps build momentum and keeps you motivated. Remember, this journey is not just about reaching goals but about the process of becoming your best self.
