Question: Lately, it seems like everyone has become jaded by ZOOM calls and may not be paying as much attention to how we’re showing up and representing our brands. Can you talk about the importance of showing up, and how our inward emotions can impact our outward appearance? And the role that our wardrobe plays in all of that?
Gaelen: 1,000,000% for sure! I started my journey with this in mind – that when we’re truly at ease with ourselves, people respond accordingly. So if we put on a ‘uniform’ for our brand people are going to feel something. They may not be in touch with it or understand it, but they’re going to feel a disconnect.
We’ve probably all met a few different people who do the same types of work. They all have the same type of business—but you’re probably drawn to one of them more than you are the others. And I’ll guarantee you, it’s because that person is representing themselves and showing up more authentically true to themselves.
You can be true to yourself, yet still, be professional. I always say, dress to please yourself first—but then make it appropriate to where you’re going, who you’re going to be, and with what you’re doing.
For example, I need sparkle today. But for this conversation, I didn’t need to look like I was going out—so I made it a little more business-appropriate, yet still bringing my personality into it. I didn’t just put on a stuffy blazer, like something from my corporate days. I’ve updated my corporate jackets to something more fun, something that represents me—and people are drawn to that. It really, really, really makes a difference.
